The King of Sarcasm: Analysis of Chandler Bing's Humorous Utterances in the TV series Friends

This thesis is focused on the analysis of the humorous lines of Chandler Bing from the series Friends (1994-2004). Specifically, it aims to find out how defensible the comedic typification of this character as the "King of Sarcasm" is, i.e., whether sarcasm can really be considered the dominant strategy of Chandler's verbal humor. However, sarcasm is a concept with an ambiguous definition, and for any further investigation it is always necessary to specify how the researcher understands it. Therefore, the work first focuses on summarizing current research in the field of sarcasm, i.e. how different authors define it, especially in relation to irony. The output from the theoretical part of the work consists of two important points: in the discussion of irony, it is the adoption of the theory of contextual inappropriateness, as presented by American linguist Salvatore Attardo. When it comes to the definition of sarcasm, an approach that strictly separates pure sarcasm from irony is defended, following the texts of Polish linguists Marta Dynel and Anna Muszynska. Sarcasm as a category includes non-ironic utterances of a critical, offensive nature, which are at the same time characterized by a certain linguistic or conceptual ingenuity. The Attitudes of Czech Viewers Towards Watching Foreign Audiovisual Works with Czech Dubbing on the Example of English-language Sitcoms

This bachelor thesis focuses on viewers' attitudes towards watching foreign English-language audiovisual works in Czech dubbing and in the original version. Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, it examines the reasons for Czech viewers' preference for dubbed and original versions, the extent to which these preferences are exclusive, and whether viewers have a negative or positive attitude towards one or the other. The aim of the thesis is, among other things, to find out whether the level of English language knowledge is an important factor in the choice of the preferred language version and whether dubbing is less attractive for younger audiences than for the older ones. The quantitative data was collected via a questionnaire survey, while the qualitative part of the research consisted of group discussion interviews - focus groups. In order to obtain more specific data, the group discussions included a short clip from the sitcom Red Dwarf in both language versions, on which the participants illustrated their viewing attitudes. Due to its extensive focus, the research also mapped the viewers' opinion on Czech dubbing and its place in television broadcasting.

The Poetics of the British Sitcom

This master's thesis is focused on British sitcoms, which represent one of the basic elements of British humour as a much sought-after phenomenon across the world, including the Czech Republic. The thesis aims to introduce the reader to this particular television genre and outline the elements of comedic content both in general, as well as in relation to certain selected works. The thesis also aims to demonstrate how the described phenomenon transcends the usual framework of television. Regarding the methodology for examining the subject matter, a synthesis of relevant sources as well as various insights obtained during the master's studies are used to examine certain selected works of popular culture which represent the very essence of British sitcoms. The thesis outlines the boundaries of a television sitcom as an independent genre, also focusing on comedic works preceding the sitcom, overlaps with other genres and various specifics connected to the British cultural environment. Established macro theories of humour are applied to the British sitcom in order to explain the source of the comedic effect, as well as the influence of comedy in relation to relieving tension within society. The thesis focuses in particular on careful observations of the humour in certain cult works of comedy, such as Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister, 'Allo 'Allo!, Red Dwarf and The IT Crowd. The closest attention is paid to the role of the individual characters and environments in selected sitcoms, since those elements might be considered vital for a successful sitcom. The influences of British productions in this area as a whole are also mentioned, noting the social relevance of this often-overlooked phenomenon.

Analysis of humour in the TV series Friends

The thesis deals with the problematic of humour and its relation to linguistics. It describes the main theories of humour and its classification. It further focuses on the pragmatics, specifically Grice's cooperative principle, and how humour is produced by its violation. It then describes the phenomenon of Wordplay. This knowledge is applied to create a taxonomy of humour which is then used to analyse the humorous situations in chosen episodes of the sitcom Friends. These humorous situations then also undergo a quantitative analysis.

Cultural Differences between the British and the American Version of the TV Series "The Office"

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse cultural differences between the British and the American society on the basis of a British sitcom called "The Office" and its American adaptation. In the first chapter of the thesis we learn the basic information about the sitcom. In chapter two there is an explanation of how could the sitcom became so popular in the US. In the second part of the same chapter we look into general differences in filming the UK and the US sitcoms. With the third chapter the analysis of the sitcom "The Office" starts. It begins with a description of its plot-line and the main characters then it moves on to analyse differences between the main characters. After this, a topic of cultural and social phenomena in the present-day UK and US society is examined. The analysis ends with the discussion on the topic of humour and its differences in the UK and the US version of the sitcom.

The changes in broadcast formats over the years are described at the end of this chapter. The next chapter defines the serial production in Czech republic, Europe and in America. The thesis describes the serials broadcast in prime time during 2019 in the third chapter. It briefly introduces some broadcast serials, which are divided by types, and mentions all the serials that were broadcast. In the last chapter there is an analysis of broadcast serials.

Czech and Dutch Audience and Their Perception of Enviromental Issues on the Example of the Big Bang Theory Series

In this work, I focus on the propagation of environmental issues through sitcom and comparison of the perception of these topics by Czech and Dutch audiences. I report on the results of focus group research of the American show The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019), from which artefacts were pre-selected with the assistance of thematic analysis. These findings suggest different perception of the environmental contents included in the researched series, the same as the varying perception of hypothetical promotion of the environmental issues in the future series. Generally speaking, the global sample perceives the promotion of environmental issues in popular media positively, though the degree and the form of the accepted usage of these topics vary. Czech audiences perceive the topics more negatively than the Dutch audience, showing a lower sensitivity threshold for a possible attack on their own opinions and identity. The most significant differences were observed in the perception of the concept of nature, the person interested in the environment, and the individual impact on the improvement/deterioration of the environment. Spectator's Reflexion of Changes in Czech Dubbing of Sitcom The Big Bang Theory

This work deals with the audience reflection on the changes in the Czech casting of the sitcom The Big Bang theory. In the introduction we will learn about dubbing and its short history in the Czech Republic and the world. We will also become acquainted with the series and its history in the Czech Republic. Finally, we get to the issue of Czech dubbing, which began in 2014. The crisis resulted in the changes in casting of manyCzech voice actors but the audience did not like them and decided to stand for them. The work deals with these reactions, more precisely the reactions to change in a particular case - The Big Bang Theory. There is an analysis of selected discussions of two media in the practical part - the iDnes.cz web portal and the Prima COOL facebook page. A quantitative content analysis was used as a methodology. The result of the thesis is the analysis and comparison of the behaviours of the viewers of both media. There is also a reflection on the theme of dubbing versus subtitles or the polemic about the future of dubbing.

The bachelor thesis focuses on the Czech translation of an American television series Friends. Firstly, I briefly describe the process of audiovisual translation, than I introduce the TV show its plot and main characters. The next part includes the analysis of the first and the last season; I provide examples of difficulties in translating English dialogues to Czech. The goal of the thesis is to prove that the globalization, the Internet and the faster spread of information; they all influence our knowledge about American culture and, consequently, the Czech translation.
